Before & After: Transforming a Log Home into a Timeless Classic

Before & After: Transforming a Log Home into a Timeless Classic

This Edwards residence tells a remodel story shaped by extraordinary circumstances. When the world slowed during the pandemic, the homeowners found themselves spending extended time in their Cordillera retreat. What began as a kitchen remodel quickly expanded into a full transformation of the 4,780-square-foot home—including the dining room, living room, main suite, mudroom, and laundry.

Collective Design Director Lisa Yates embraced the challenge of designing virtually, guiding the clients through every selection—finishes, fixtures, furnishings, and décor—to create a cohesive, modern design that felt both casual and classic. Rather than disguising the home’s log structure, the vision was to celebrate it, softening ornate details and introducing a lighter, more contemporary aesthetic.

The Kitchen: Function Meets Refinement

The remodel began with a reimagined island that opened the kitchen and created space for gathering. Custom cabinetry from Leadville-based Cutting Edge Woodworking brought dimension and contrast—perimeter cabinets painted in Benjamin Moore’s Dorian Gray paired with a rich “Spanish Oak” finish on the island. Layered countertops—Cardoso Black granite and leathered White Pearl quartzite—added texture and tone. Modern lighting and new furnishings in the breakfast nook completed the space, designed for everything from morning coffee to dinner with guests.

The Living Room: Grounded & Contemporary

In the adjacent living room, the fireplace set the stage for transformation. A stacked-stone surround and streamlined sandstone mantel introduced a fresh focal point. A Lee Industries sectional and nesting cocktail tables replaced dated furnishings, while a soft, neutral palette framed the room’s expansive views—letting nature’s backdrop take center stage.

The Bedroom Suite: Elevated Comfort

Upstairs, the main bedroom suite became a study in refined mountain style. A custom live-edge wood headboard, crafted by a Collective fabricator, anchors the space against a silk wallcovering by Phillip Jeffries. Thoughtful details—Kravet pillows and sculptural lamps by Jamie Young Co.—layer warmth and sophistication, balancing rustic character with modern elegance.

“It’s been really enjoyable to see the evolution of Cordillera throughout the years and be part of a project that can carry the neighborhood into a new generation,” Yates reflects.

A Home Reimagined

The completed design embodies what Collective strives for: a seamless dialogue between traditional and modern, tailored to each client’s lifestyle. This transformation not only refreshed a beloved log home but also ensured it will remain timeless for years to come.
